Renew, Refresh & Review Your Reiki Practice- Why?

The following is the background and inspiration for the new course, Rooted Reiki Review. If you don’t have time to read the whole blog (though I recommend when you can!) The details of the 3 month program are here. I think this is going to be a great way to reconnect and regulate the nervous system! It includes:

  • 12 Wednesday Zoom calls when we PRACTICE Reiki and Japanese practices for meditation

  • Wednesday meetings include material covered in the first half of Nicholas Pearson’s book, Foundations of Reiki Ryoho, plus new material from recent Reiki classes I’ve taken

  • 2 Day-long retreats- this can be in person or hybrid on Zoom

  • Reiju (initiation) for Shoden (Reiki 1)

  • Monthly 45 minute Reiki session with Tekla (October-December)

  • We begin Wednesday, September 30 on zoom!

  • This is the first time I’m offering this class and all of this is only $200/month or $600 total

This blog is about what brought me to this point in my teaching and why I invite my former Reiki students to join! If you have taken Reiki with another teacher, let’s talk about you joining.

In 2021, when I started deep diving into antiracism work, taking classes at Building Bridges with Maren Miller, I started to see more clearly cultural appropriation, and started to question my own white woman self teaching the Japanese practice of Reiki. I decided to start to learn more about the practice, and to see how the practice has been changed and Westernized. I was excited to find the International House of Reiki, then run by Bronwen (now Logan) and Frans Stein. They had many published books and their focus was to teach the Japanese Art of Reiki, before it was Westernized. They each have done a ton of research in Japan, and are dedicated to teaching the roots of Reiki and the Japanese practices that influence Reiki.

I led book groups with my Reiki students, reading The Japanese Art of Reiki, and even held an antiracist Reiki circle for a bit when we dove into how & why we (as mostly white women) were sharing Reiki (and if we should). These were pandemic times and we had lots of time to read, look at ourselves and analyze (I miss those days!) During that time I also found Carrie Varela and Michaela Daystar, who hosted the Reiki Women podcast with Bronwyn Logan. I reached out to them, and have taken a few classes with all of them. They are all dedicated to teaching Reiki from the Japanese perspective.

For about 6 years now, I've been working to decolonize my Reiki practice, inspired by new material I was learning, and from my attendance in Dr. Jennifer Mullan’s monthly office hours (she is the author of Decolonizing Therapy). I originally learned Reiki from the William Rand manuals, which are not always clear on acknowledging where practices originate and going into depth with the history. I was seeking more!

This past summer I was inspired to learn and immersed myself into more Reiki training, taking Decolonizing your Reiki Practice, the History of the Chakra System, and Okuden (Reiki 2) and a Reiki business class with Carrie Varela. I also took The Power of Psychic Reiki and Advanced Reiki Symbols masterclass with Nicholas Pearson. I'll be taking Shinpiden (teacher training advanced Reiki) with Pearson this October in Massachusetts. These teachers have studied many different types of Reiki and both honor the Japanese origins of Reiki, and see how Reiki has always been influenced by the Western world. Another book I read this summer and couldn't put down was Alternate Currents by Justin Stein. I've been inspired by these teachers and authors, and have learned so much, I am so excited to share this Reiki Review class

The world needs Reiki more than ever and I really want to keep teaching and sharing this beautiful practice, and building community around practicing Reiki.

the importance of PRACTICE- this course includes weekly practice in community- and the retreats are immersive practice time!

Of course with Reiki, the way to connect with it is to practice daily, just reading about it won't get you there, and it is very important that, especially non-Japanese people need to make sure we know the most about the practice & history that we can, as to not culturally appropriate, and instead to have cultural appreciation- this can be challenging with how Reiki has been taught by some authors and teachers. New information has been discovered about Reiki and the history in just the past few years, I'm looking forward to reviewing and sharing with you some of what I’ve learned!

This is the perfect way to reconnect with your own Reiki practice, learn some new information, and be in community- we meet weekly and we meet for 2 full days of retreat- and at an initial very affordable price!

If you have not stayed up with your Reiki practice, this is a wonderful way to re-start and get re-inspired, and to connect with others who appreciate the power of Reiki magic! Application is here.
